Scrum Team Asks... Can we mix & match frameworks?

Scrum Team Asks... Can we mix & match frameworks?

Yes, you can, but this is what you would want to consider first...

Why use Scrum in the first place?

Scrum is a value-based methodology that has feedback and quality built in to each stage, with team members sharing knowledge and experience. It breaks down large projects into bite-sized chunks called "sprints" and improves products and processes by frequent inspection and adaptation through a feedback process. One thing that's great about the Scrum framework is that it makes applying Agile methodology easy and most users feel that it improves their work-life.

Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls...

Some workplaces are mixing frameworks, and each team must choose what works for them. Especially when there is so much similarity between other Agile frameworks, it may be tempting to borrow or mix and match. However, it is likely that either the its time to strengthen scrum understanding and skills through training, coach or re-train the team, or use a different Agile framework that meets the longterm needs of the company better. There are many resources and templates available to help coach and strengthen your team. Sometimes we fall into a pattern of behavior because we individual used a different framework in the past, but scrum really highlights teams working together to produce value in usually a two week timeline. Compare this timeframe to Waterfall with a 6 month time frame with few opportunities to adapt. Rather than mixing frame works, find ways the strengthen scrum.

"A re-examination of the values, team dialogue, and focusing on commitment to the team, can really change scrum events from tedious to inspiring!"

Scrum Values

I find another time when frameworks are being mixed, and people are returning to old habits, one thing that is being overlooked is the scrum values. A re-examination of the values, team dialogue, and focusing on commitment to the team, can really change scrum events from tedious to inspiring!

DevOps

One finally note is that a team that is struggling with Scrum or Agile may want to look at DevOps. Many of the tools and ideas for DevOps comes from Agile. DevOps does not replace an Agile framework but works within the concept and values.
